Five questions to ask your pool service company

Are you tired of spending your weekends cleaning and maintaining your pool? Have you been looking for a pool service company, but don’t know what makes one company better than another?

Here are five tips to help you choose the best pool service company for you and your pool. 

Is the company licensed?

Is the company licensed to do business and/or do they have a contractor’s license?  Some states do not require a contractor’s license so check with your area. Also, there are specific courses and certifications for pool service and pool operators. Check whether their employees have received their training.

Is the company insured?

Choose a company with liability insurance, and verify that the insurance is current. Accidents happen. For example, spilled pool chemicals can damage decorative stained concrete. 

How does the company handle customer service?

Are they easy to reach by phone?  Are they available and on time? Friendly customer service will make any situation that may arise easier to work through.

Is the cost reasonable?

Consider all of the costs involved, not just the quote for the monthly service charge. Often companies will add extra charges for little things that can add up, so ask for a list of prices for common items to see what could be added to the quote.

Who do your friends have clean their pools?

Someone you know and trust may use a pool service company. Ask him or her what they like and don’t like about the company.

In summary, a good pool maintenance company can save you time, money and many headaches.  Take the time to pick the best pool service company for you.

    I just installed a pool at my home and I am looking for a good pool service. I have gotten a couple of references, but I am not really sure how pool cleaning is really suppose to work. I really liked your tip about finding out how the company handles the customer. I have a few questions and the company who answers those with the most patients will probably be the one I go with. Thank you for sharing.

    We installed a swimming pool last summer. It’s only until now, that I’m realizing the service that is required to maintain the pool. I’m looking for a company to come and service it for cheap. Thanks for these questions, they have helped me know what I need to look for.

    I think it is a really good idea to ask your friends and neighbors who they have servicing their pools. References are almost always the best way to find the best service. Besides, if you decide to use the same company as your neighbors you are doing their technician a service since he won’t have to drive as far between jobs.

    I like your tip on looking for a pool cleaner who is easy to reach by phone. I would imagine that finding someone who you can be in direct communication with would be really helpful. My husband and I are looking for someone to clean our pool so we should take into account the ease of contacting the person we hire.

    Thanks for the tips for talking to a pool servicing company. I definitely agree that it’s good to check if the company is licensed and insured. I wouldn’t want an accident to happen and end up having to pay for it.

    A friend of mine has a really neat pool, but could use some help in maintaining it. You wrote that one of the most important aspects of choosing a pool service, is making sure that they have good customer support. You advised calling them, and taking special note of how they treat you on the phone. I’ll be sure my friend does that, and only considers ones that treated her great. Thanks for the advice.

    I like that the article points out the importance of choosing a pool service with proper insurance. Pools are quite expensive and usually a huge investment after all. Because of that, you want to make sure that you’ll be if there’s an accident.

    It really is important to make sure that the pool service is properly licensed. After all, it can be very difficult to keep a pool well maintained, especially when having to balance the PH level. A properly licensed swimming pool service will have the proper training and credentials to keep your pool in top shape.

    I really like that you discussed the importance of a company having insurance in the event that an accident might occur. My wife and I are planning on having a pool built in our backyard, but know that we won’t have the proper time to be able to maintain and clean it. Having a reputable service company come and be able to maintain our pool, and cover any other pool-related issues we may have will be a huge help!

    I like your suggestion to find a pool service with current liability insurance since accidents can occur at any time. My husband and I have just installed a new pool, so we are wondering how to find the service to help clean and maintain it.
