Four tips for keeping your pool looking brand new

You’ve just installed a new pool, and you want to make sure it looks great for years to come. Here are some pool cleaning tips that will help you extend the life of your pool.

Keep your pool clean

Clean your pool weekly. Use a vacuum to clean up dirt and debris from the bottom of the pool. There are many vacuum options, including robotic and energy efficient. Scrub the walls and tile regularly, even when it looks clean. Choose a brush that won’t damage the material.

Clean your filter regularly

The frequency will depend on the type of filter you have, so check the instructions and then follow what the manufacturer recommends. Generally, cartridge filters need to be cleaned several times a year, while sand filters require backwashing a few times per month. Be careful not to clean your filter too often, since that can also be harmful.

Choose a low chlorine pool system

Choosing an advanced oxidation pool treatment system can help you keep your pool looking newer longer. Chlorine is corrosive to concrete pool coping and sealers and even low levels of chlorine can cause bleaching and corrosion. Salt water pools have even more problems with corrosive. Corrosion of underwater metal surfaces and equipment can release metal ions into the water that can damage vinyl liners, copper heat exchangers, pool surfaces, pool sanitizers and also cause more staining.

Balance your water: No matter what system you use, swimming pools can quickly become stained, discolored and corroded without proper maintenance.  Remember that even if you reduce or eliminate chlorine, keeping the pH, calcium hardness and total alkalinity balanced and in optimal range is the best way to increase the life of your pool.

    These are some great tips, and I appreciate your advice to clean your pool weekly. That sounds like a lot of time and effort, but if you think about it, that amount is minimal compared to the hassle of taking care of bigger problems. It’s definitely better to do a little bit on a regular basis rather than having to deal with large issues. Thanks for the great post!

    You have some very good information here! I agree with the cartridge filters being over cleaned. I have seen this many times and it can do some serious damage to them. Personally my favorite option for filters is Diatomaceous Earth filter. Although they need back washed frequently and more powder added I enjoy how well they collect particles from the water.
    Having a regular high quality pool cleaning expert is the best idea for most pool owners. This will give the owner a peace of mind that everything is cared for properly.

    Great tips here, this just goes to show how a little effort now can save you a lot of headache later on. Keeping your chemicals in balance is a must, and don’t just keep adding more. We have seen too many cases where individuals thought “oh my pool is getting dirty, lets add more chemicals”… And then their pool lining starts to get brittle and crack and now they need to get their whole pool liner replaced, OUCH!

    My wife really wants to have a pool put in our yard, but I think we need to do our research on what is expected of us as pool owners before we take the leap. I thought it was interesting how the article mentions that weekly cleaning is necessary even if the pool doesn’t look like it needs it. I’ll make sure my wife is willing to keep up on regular maintenance of the pool with me before we decide to get one.

    Yes, I believe that the idea of having a swimming pool in the back yard will always be incredibly glamorous. But the fact is that the maintenance without proper maintenance routine, the pool could succumb to a variety of less than luxurious condition- green water, algae build are just the name of a few. So, make skimming and scrubbing a part of life because skimming the leaves and debris the surface of the water is a no-brainer, but it bears repeating. In addition to that one may follow the above mentioned tips to keep his swimming pool looking brand new.

    This is some really good information about pools and how to keep them clean. I like what you said about how you should balance your pH levels in your pool water. My parents are considering getting a pool in their yard recently. So, it does seem like a good idea for them to know what level of pH they should have in their pool water.

My family is thinking of going ahead and getting a pool in our backyard, and we have been looking for tips for good maintenance. Getting swimming pool equipment that can help maintain the appearance of the pool, such as balancing water, is something we should start looking into.

    Thanks for this, I didn’t know I needed a vacuum for the debris at the bottom. I have a pool skimmer but I think there is a few things that I am missing. Do you some sort of list of everything a pool owner should have to maintain their pool? Thanks!

    I was very surprised to learn that chlorine can corrode the sides of your pool! My brother recently moved into a new house that has a pool, and he told me that he doesn’t know how to take care of his pool. I will be sure to tell him that investing in a low chlorine pool solution will be good for his pool!

    Just got a new house that has a pool. I have no idea how to take care of it. Thank you for letting me know that I can over change my filters were it is hurting the pool. Along with following your advice, on how to keep it clean, by weekly cleaning(like shared,) I want to find a place that can fix all the problems with my pool. Right now, it has some rough edges.
